NIEU-BETHESDA – Hester Steynberg of 'Ganora Guestfarm' outside Nieu-Bethesda was approached by the Hantam Community Education Trust in Colesberg (HCET) a few months ago to participate in an exciting youth development project.
She was asked to find two young matriculants in the village who would then be given the opportunity to enrol in the College, enabling them to work towards a diploma in the hospitality industry.
After a series of interviews, Gavinene Davies and Felicia Mitchell were selected to further their studies at the College.
The one-year diploma involves six months of theoretical work on campus, after which the students are placed in the hospitality industry for six months of practical work.
The HCET is registered with City and Guilds as a sub-centre of Steyn's Culinary School, which enables the Trust to offer a Diploma Course in Hospitality.
During their practical time, Gavinene and Felicia have worked under Ganora's chef Max, who has mentored them in all things culinary.
They have also been trained by Hester regarding bookings, front of house, housekeeping and dealing with clients.
Felicia says that she has learned a great during her time at HCET and Ganora, and once she has her diploma hopes to study even further in the field as it has sparked such interest in her.
This wonderful opportunity has placed these two young women in good stead for a promising future.
