OUDTSHOORN NEWS - The spirit of Nelson Mandela was alive and thriving on the pitch at the Oudtshoorn Infantry School as the second annual Mandela Day Soccer Celebration kicked off with a symbolic 67-minute match between Superstrikers FC and OLFA Dysselsdorp FC.
The event brought together young soccer talent and their communities for a day of unity, friendship, and sport. The 67-minute match pays tribute to the 67 years Mandela dedicated to fighting for social justice.
“This match was more than just a game,” said Major Desiree Mawela, “It was our contribution to honor Tata Madiba while creating a space where young people could come together, meet new friends, enjoy the game, and strengthen bonds with their teams, families, and coaches.”
Communities from Oudtshoorn, Dysselsdorp, Lategansvlei and Beaufort West were represented, using the day to shine a spotlight on junior soccer development and community upliftment.
With the anticipation of a new junior league season, the event served as both a celebration and a reminder of the unifying power of sport.
Gratitude was extended to Colonel Tiisetso Sekgobela for his support in allowing Alpha FC Oudtshoorn, the Infantry School’s junior football club, to host the festivities on the school’s sports grounds.
“This was more than just a soccer match, it was a celebration of Mandela’s legacy and the positive future we’re building through sport,” Mawela added.
