OUDTSHOORN NEWS - SWD cricket team recorded their seventh draw of the season in the Sunfoil Cup three day competition against Namibia in Windhoek.
"SWD has now drawn all their matches in this seasons' competition and they admit that the past weekend was their worst performance of the season. Rain potentially saved them from an outright defeat," said Albertus Kennedy, SWD cricket CEO.
Namibia posted 323 runs in their first innings thanks to half-centuries by Craig Williams (67) and Niko Davin (70). Marcello Piedt (5/79) and Bradley de Villiers (2/56) excelled with the ball for SWD.
"SWD's batting performance in their first innings was very disappointed as only Brendon Louw (41) made a meaningful contribution." SWD was on 132 (all out), a deficit of 191 runs in the first innings.
Namibia, who did not enforce the follow-on, perhaps batting for too long, as the posted 248 in their second innings – setting SWD a mammoth 440 for victory and only giving themselves 85 overs to dismiss the visitors.
JP Kotze (102) was Namibia's batting hero while de Villiers, who played in his first-class match, took (2/56 and 7/79) a total of nine wickets in the match.
"For SWD it was always a matter of survival with a target of 440 and with their total at 34/3 they were with their backs against the wall but Daniel Sincuba (24*) and Obus Pienaar (56*) fought hard when rain, which started an hour after lunch on the final day, brought an early end to the match."
SWD was on 114/3.
"SWD missed their main strike bowler, Glenton Stuurman, who was ruled out with an elbow injury. His recovery and availability will be vital for SWD's next Sunfoil Cup match against Border that will be played at the Rec in Oudtshoorn"
The match is scheduled for 15 until 17 February.
SWD suffered a disappointing seven-wicket defeat in the limited overs match against Namibia.
The men from the Southern Cape were dismissed for 214 in the 45th over. Namibia reached the target (216/3) in the 36th over.
