Eleven vehicles were bought with money from the Police Department's budget between 2013 and 2016, at a total cost of R8.6 million.
Police Minister Nkosinathi Nhleko disclosed the amount in a written response to a parliamentary question.
Democratic Alliance (DA) Member of Parliament (MP) Zak Mbhele asked whether any vehicles were purchased from the South African Police Service (Saps) budget for use by Zuma’s spouses.
In response Nhleko said the vehicles, which include four Range Rover SUVs, priced at nearly R1 million each, are to provide “comprehensive protection of VIP spouses”.
