NATIONAL NEWS - Tshwane metro police (TMPD) on Wednesday arrested seven people in connection with fraudulent Sassa cards at a mall in the north of Pretoria.
The arrest was made at the Kolonnade Mall where police with metro police and security officials were conducting patrols as part of a joint operation, according to a TMPD statement.
“Officers were searching various people at ATMs inside the mall when they found two people in possession of 13 Sassa cards and R32 431 in cash.
“The pair were arrested for Sassa card fraud after they could not account for the cards or the money.”
A further five people were also arrested.
“A man and women were found in possession of 61 Sassa cards and cash amounting to R110 070 for which they could not account.
“A total of 91 Sassa cards and cash amount of R191 671 was seized from the seven arrested suspects.”
Meanwhile, Kolonnade centre management said it was grateful to the TMPD and its new security provider, Night Guard Security, for helping with the arrest of the suspects.
“We are proud of the proactive teamwork done by both institutions, especially during these very trying times in the retail industry,” management said in a statement.
“We believe it is vital for our on-site staff to work hand-in-hand with local authorities. Wednesday’s arrests prove the positive impact that teamwork between our security staff and local authorities have on curbing crime in our area.”
