NATIONAL NEWS - The Post Office will take over the disbursement of social grants from next year, the government announced on Sunday.
Minister in the presidency Jeff Radebe said a new deal had been signed between the SA Social Security Agency (Sassa) and the Post Office.
Early this year, the Constitutional Court declared the contract Sassa had entered into with Cash Paymaster Services (CPS) invalid but condoned it until March next year.
The court gave the department until 8 December to produce a comprehensive plan on how it would continue paying the more than 17 million grant recipients after March.
Radebe said: “The Post Office will provide cash disbursement through its branch network, particularly in locations close enough to replace existing cash pay-points. It may also develop a competitive alternative to the current cash in transit pay-point service, subject to the approval of Sassa.”
