NATIONAL NEWS - A bus crash on the R21 in the East Rand has claimed 16 lives, while 45 others were injured.
The Road Traffic Management Corporation confirmed the increased death toll and said its crash investigation unit was on the scene earlier yesterday.
Kempton Express reports the R21 north before OR Tambo International Airport has since been reopened to traffic following the incident.
The injured, reportedly including the bus driver, were transported to various medical facilities in the surrounding areas.
Ekurhuleni Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Roads and Transport Planning, Councillor Andile Mngwevu, visited the scene yesterday and vowed a full probe into the crash.
“We are lost for words. This is a disaster. Our heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased, and our prayers for a speedy recovery to those who have been taken to various hospitals around the area.”
