NATIONAL NEWS - South African city centres are some of the biggest crime hotspots according to the latest info by Crime Stats SA. In South Africa, crime has to be reported at the police station of the area in which the crime was committed so the stats give a fair indication of which areas have the most crime.
Some police stations, however, have a larger crime jurisdiction depending on how remote they are and how many areas they service. In some small towns and rural areas, one police station may service a number of surrounding areas.
Gauteng, the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal rank as the three provinces with the worst crime. This comes as no surprise as these provinces have the country’s biggest metropolitan cities and the highest populations.
According to the annual Victims of Crime Survey 2017/18, there has been an increase in crime since 2016 and South Africans are increasingly getting frustrated with the SAPS.
