NATIONAL NEWS - Two suspects have been arrested in connection with the murder of Ncamisile Zuma (28), who was found dead and burnt a few metres from her home in Sweetwaters, KZN, on 31 March.
The Witness reports that Mnoneni Bhengu (36) and Mduduzi Zuma (40) made their first appearance in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court yesterday, after they were arrested on Saturday following a resident’s tip-off to police.
They both face charges of rape, murder and attempting to defeat or obstruct the course of justice.
According to family members, Ncamisile was last seen the day before her body was discovered, after she had attended a neighbour’s birthday celebration.
Her body was found by her brother, Siphesihle Mhlongo, who says he found his sister lying face down, and it looked like she had been strangled before she was set on fire.
Sweetwaters ward councillor Jabulisile Ngubo says as a community, they are disappointed and saddened by what happened to Zuma.
“We have been with the family [during] this period. What has been more shocking to us is that these two suspects are Ncamisile’s neighbours.
“We are still unclear on what actually happened that night, but we are hoping that all will be revealed [in due time],” says Ngubo.
She adds that one of the suspects was a CPF member. “[The accused] are trusted people in our community. Zuma is currently a member of the CPF. He is supposed to be protecting women,” adds Ngubo.
Zuma and Bhengu are due to appear again in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court on 14 April, for their bail application.
Ncamisile’s funeral will take place today at the Blackburn Grounds in Sweetwaters.
