LADISMITH NEWS - The Klein Karoo Ladismith Jeugmark/Youth Market will return for its fifth annual edition on Wednesday 1 July, promising a vibrant winter holiday outing for families and visitors to the Little Karoo.
Hosted in the small town of Ladismith, the market was originally launched in a local coffee shop by two mothers who wanted to create an opportunity for their children to showcase their creativity, sell handmade products and earn pocket money.
What began as a modest initiative quickly exceeded expectations and has grown into a well-supported community event.
Due to increasing participation and visitor numbers, the market moved to the Dutch Reformed Church hall in Queen Street, providing a warm indoor venue ideal for winter conditions. This year's event is already fully booked, with 42 young entrepreneurs taking part from towns including Darling, Albertinia and Oudtshoorn.
According to Carien Meyer, an organiser, year five marks a special milestone for the event, as three former youth vendors, aged 21, 18 and 17, have joined the organising committee, demonstrating how the initiative continues to develop entrepreneurial skills among young participants.
"Although all stallholders are aged 25 years and younger, with the youngest participant only seven years old, visitors can expect a wide variety of high-quality products appealing to all ages. Shoppers will find unique gifts and décor items, rope baskets and placemats, natural skincare products and soaps, plants, crocheted toys, botanical and wildlife greeting cards, woodturning demonstrations, jewellery, candles, leather goods, toys and many other handcrafted items."
Food lovers will also be well catered for, with freshly brewed cappuccinos, homemade baked goods such as brownies, fudge, carrot cake and cinnamon buns, sourdough bread, jams, honeybush tea, honey, nut butters, fresh produce, cheeses, and even fresh mutton and goat meat packs on offer.
Organisers invite residents and holidaymakers to support young entrepreneurs while enjoying a relaxed community atmosphere during the winter school holidays.
The market will take place at the Ladismith Dutch Reformed Church Hall in Queen Street on Wednesday 1 July from 10:00 to 14:00.
