Ungerer was earlier this week applauded by Sylvester for the sterling performance she displayed at the championships since last week. The Oudtshoorn resident scooped a gold medal on Thursday, 27 October in the 100m for women aged 70 plus. On Tuesday, 1 November she attained a silver medal in the 200m for women and on Wednesday, 2 November she broke a world record in the heats of the 400m event for women.
All eyes will be on Ungerer tomorrow, Saturday 5 November as she competes in the final for the 400m.
“I’d like to assure you that the entire Oudtshoorn and South Africa are behind you. You’ve already made us proud, tomorrow’s final is another opportunity, we wish you all the best for the 400m finals,” said Sylvester.
In reaction to Ungerer’s victory for the gold medal, Sylvester said earlier this week: “I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Toy Ungerer for attaining a gold medal at the World Championships in Perth. This is not only her personal achievement, but a historical event for the greater Oudtshoorn."
