Ungerer was earlier this week applauded by Sylvester for the sterling performance she displayed at the championships since last week. The Oudtshoorn resident scooped a gold medal on Thursday, 27 October in the 100m for women aged 70 plus. On Tuesday, 1 November she attained a silver medal in the 200m for women and on Wednesday, 2 November she broke a world record in the heats of the 400m event for women.
In reaction to Ungerer’s victory for the gold medal, Sylvester said earlier this week: “I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Toy Ungerer for attaining a gold medal at the World Championships in Perth. This is not only her personal achievement, but a historical event for the greater Oudtshoorn."
