At a gala dinner held in Stellenbosch on Monday Eden District Municipality was named the winner of the Greenest Municipality Competition for district municipalities.
Remarking on the honour, an elated Executive Manager for Management Services, Clive Africa said, "Teamwork makes the dream work." Eden was placed first overall for Biodiversity and Coastal Management; Waste Management and Air Quality Management.
The event was held to honour officials working in the environment and was like the 'Oscars for greenies'. Overberg District was placed fourth overall; there was a joint second place between Cape Winelands and Cape West Coast and in first place overall was Eden District Municipality - the greenest district municipality for the last two years running.
The prize money amounted to R120 000 and was awarded with a selection of trophies in recognition of this accolade.
In the category for local municipalities Mossel Bay was the winner for the second year running and received prize money of R130 000.
Hessequa, which includes the towns of Riversdal, Heidelberg and Stilbaai came second (R70 000) with Knysna following in third place (R50 000).
