GARDEN ROUTE | KAROO NEWS - The South African Weather Service has issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for damaging winds along the Western Cape coastline, valid from midnight on Saturday, 20 December, until midnight on Sunday, 21 December.
Strong to near-gale force south to south-easterly winds of 50–62 km/h, with gusts of up to 85 km/h, are expected along the west and south-west coast on Saturday, shifting to the south coast on Sunday.
These conditions may result in sand build-up on coastal roads, disruption at small harbours, and dangerous conditions at sea, particularly for small vessels.
Temporary structures may also be damaged, and the risk of localised runaway fires is elevated.
In addition, a veld fire warning (FDI above 75) remains in place for parts of the Western Cape and Northern Cape, including Beaufort West, Oudtshoorn, the West Coast interior, Cederberg, Hantam, Kamiesberg and Nama Khoi. Very hot, dry and windy conditions could cause fires to ignite and spread rapidly, posing a threat to property, livestock and human life.
Residents are urged to exercise caution, avoid open flames, secure loose items, and remain alert to changing weather conditions.
