BUSINESS NEWS - With World Sight Day taking place internationally on 8 October, the team at Slabbert, Bouwer & Robinson Optometrists is turning the spotlight on an increasingly important concern among children: myopia, or short-sightedness.
Myopia occurs when a person can see close objects clearly, but distant objects appear blurry.
While myopia can have a genetic component, research has also linked its development with factors such as increased time spent on near-work activities, particularly when these habits begin at a young age.
And the problem is growing. It is estimated that up to five billion people could be living with myopia by 2050.
Why early detection matters
The rate at which myopia progresses is often fastest in children younger than 10, making early detection and appropriate management crucial.
However, there is still a lack of awareness among parents and patients about myopia and the options available to help slow its progression.
This World Sight Day, Slabbert, Bouwer & Robinson Optometrists encourage parents to look for signs that their child’s distance vision may not be as clear as it should be.

A different approach to managing myopia
One option available for children is MiYOSMART, an innovative spectacle lens specifically designed for myopia control.
Unlike ordinary spectacle lenses that simply correct blurred vision, MiYOSMART lenses are therapeutic lenses designed to help slow the progression of myopia.
The lenses are:
- clinically proven to slow myopia progression;
- non-invasive and easy to use;
- child-friendly; and
- designed to be easy for children to adapt to.
MiYOSMART lenses are specifically designed for children between the ages of 8 and 18.
If your child is struggling to see the board at school, squinting to see objects in the distance, sitting increasingly close to screens or books, or frequently complaining that things in the distance are blurry, it may be time for an eye examination.
