Breaking News
OUDTSHOORN NEWS - A new case of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) has been identified within the Oudtshoorn Municipal Area, near Matjiesrivier.
According to Dr Cathy Fox from the State Veterinary Service, a second farm located in the northern parts of Oudtshoorn tested positive yesterday, Wednesday 27 May.
The premises, described as a small dairy farm with a herd of 36 cattle, reported animals presenting minor lesions.
Samples were collected as a precautionary measure and have since been laboratory confirmed as positive.
The affected farm has been formally notified and placed under quarantine. Response actions have been initiated, including the establishment of a biosecurity perimeter to prevent further spread and to contain the virus within the affected area.
The existing “FMD Garden Route” WhatsApp group will be used to share updates regarding Vehicle Control Points (VCPs) to avoid fragmented communication.
Vehicle Control Points (VCPS) / checkpoints: Placement, resourcing and responsibilities
To maintain the 10km biosecurity perimeter around both of the affected farms, three Vehicle Control Points (VCPs) are considered sufficient to regulate movement into and out of the affected area while optimising the use of available manpower.
Closure of roads: Applications and roads closed for traffic
Applications for the closure of Western Cape Provincial Roads must be directed to Gerhard Otto, [email protected].
Residents will be able to access these roads, but not other motorists or cyclists.
Role players involved in approving these applications, include the GRDM Disaster Management Centre, Western Cape Provincial Government Roads Engineer, the South African Police Service and the affected local municipality law enforcement.
