Many of the participants are inmates competing in reading, debating, spelling and book reviews across 12 official South African languages. This year, Nama has also been included to support indigenous linguistic rights and multilingual learning. The championship forms part of efforts to promote literacy, critical thinking and rehabilitation. At the opening ceremony, the Minister of Correctional Services, Dr Pieter Groenewald, spoke about the programme’s role in rehabilitation and reintegration. He also addressed the pressing issues of gender-based violence and crime in South Africa. A candle was lit in remembrance of those who have been affected by gender-based violence.
